Daphne Wish You A Happy New Year

The Chinese Little New Year (also known as Xiao Nian 小年) is a traditional celebration that marks the beginning of preparations for the Chinese New Year. It usually falls about a week before the Lunar New Year, so it’s often celebrated on the 23rd or 24th day of the 12th month of the lunar calendar.

It’s mainly observed in northern China, where people begin to clean their homes, offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God (who is believed to report the household’s behavior to the Jade Emperor), and start preparing for the big New Year festivities. The Kitchen God’s statue is often cleaned, and offerings of sweets are made to ensure a good report to the Jade Emperor.

In some areas, families also burn incense, light fireworks, and even have a special meal as part of this day’s celebration. It’s a little less formal and less grand than the full Chinese New Year, but it’s still an important marker in the lead-up to the holiday.
